Content creation automation has been a moving target. Early tools generated text that needed heavy editing. Later tools could draft acceptable copy but couldn’t publish it. MCP-connected AI agents can now do both — generate and publish — which changes the workflow significantly. If you haven’t already set up Claude Code on your WordPress site, that’s the prerequisite before any of the workflows below are possible.
The key distinction: automation handles the mechanical steps; humans handle judgment. Knowing what to write about, what angle to take, what voice to use — these belong to the human. Formatting it as WordPress HTML, setting the SEO metadata, uploading the image, scheduling the post — these are mechanical steps that an AI agent handles faster and more consistently than a human.
The Five-Step AI Content Workflow
1. Brief the agent, not the post
Instead of writing the post yourself and then publishing it, write a brief that the agent turns into a post. A good brief is specific: topic, target keyphrase, intended audience, tone, approximate length, and any sources or data points to include. The agent produces a draft; you review the substance, not the formatting.
2. Let the agent handle SEO metadata
With Yoast SEO integration, the agent sets the focus keyphrase, meta title, and meta description based on the content it wrote — or based on explicit instructions in your brief. It can also trigger a Yoast reindex (wds/reindex-yoast-seo) after bulk updates to refresh Yoast’s overview scores.
3. Image sourcing and upload in one step
The wds/upload-image ability sideloads an image from any public URL directly into the WordPress Media Library and sets it as the featured image. Combined with an image search step (Unsplash API, or a web search for Creative Commons images), the agent can find, download, and set the featured image as part of the same workflow.
4. Category and tag management
The wds/create-post ability auto-creates categories and tags that don’t exist. For an agent running a content series, this means taxonomy stays consistent automatically — no manual category assignment per post.
5. Scheduling
Posts created as draft can be scheduled to publish at a specific date and time via the WordPress REST API. An agent can create a full editorial calendar — 12 posts, scheduled weekly — from a single session.
What Still Requires Human Judgment
The workflow above handles mechanics. It doesn’t handle strategy. Before automating, decide: what’s the content strategy? What topics, what keywords, what competitive angle? The agent executes the strategy. It doesn’t design it.
Also: factual accuracy. AI-generated content should be reviewed for factual claims, especially in regulated industries or for anything that makes specific product or legal claims. The agent drafts; the human verifies. For teams running WooCommerce alongside a content site, the same agent can manage WooCommerce products with AI using the same MCP connection.
WDS MCP Content Manager Pro provides all the WordPress-side abilities this workflow requires: create-post, update-post, reindex-yoast-seo, upload-image, set-featured-image, create-category, and create-tag. Connect it to your Claude session and the mechanical steps disappear from your workflow.
